In the past few years, the boom of canned drinks has taken over the category of ready-to-drink beverages. One of the main reasons for this category’s recent popularity can be Cutwater Spirits, which uses its liquor in every product. It was started as a side-project within a brewery; Cutwater was later split into its own and was later purchased by Anheuser-Busch, which capitalized on its distribution across the country and market. Sales are said to be up 64 percent from the year 2017.

In addition to its enormous popularity among customers, it is also beginning to impress critics from the industry. The company was awarded three awards at the most recent L.A. Spirits Awards, including Best Ready-To-Drink Cocktail for its Orange Vodka Smash and Best Tequila for its Anejo Tequila well as Best Rum with its three Sheets Cask Strength Rum.

Before the time that Cutwater Spirits pioneered the canned classic category of cocktails, it was a tiny business growing within Ballast Point brewery. The concept was the idea of Ballast’s then head brewery manager Yuseff Cherney and the company’s founder Jack White. Together, they built Cutwater until the point at which it needed its distilling facility. The year 2015 saw Constellation bought Ballast Point, and, when Cutwater -and Cherney as the master distiller was moved to its new home, it separated of Ballast Point.

Cutwater distillery is situated on the outskirts of San Diego and claims to be the first operation in the city since Prohibition. Nowadays, San Diego is home to more than a dozen distilleries with a craft spirit.

The distillery’s current offerings come in four categories: Spirits, canned cocktails, frozen pops of cocktail, mixers, and cocktails. It’ll be very difficult to find any cocktail recipe Cutwater cannot help you develop from herbal liquors to hot Bloody Mary mix to ginger beer.


The sales of Cutwater Tequila Margarita grew by 190% in 2020, prompting the speedy introduction of three more flavors. Mango Margarita was released on February 21, 2021, followed by Strawberry Margarita and Peach Margarita rolling out shortly following April.

While the Margs Margs have had many successes, the brand has been victims of its failures. It was previously reported that the distillery tried with schnapps made of local plums. But, it was found that plums didn’t make much juice and all that was left was a single bottle of schnapps.


In the Covid-19 pandemic, the distillery reopened its doors to help industry and hospitality workers provide socially-distanced meal pickups. This program helped facilitate interaction between trade partners — helping those searching for education or work opportunities in the wake of layoffs caused by the pandemic that impacted the industry. Apart from helping those working in the industry, Cutwater donated 50,000 meals to the San Diego Food Bank during the outbreak. It also used a section of its production facilities to create hand sanitizers donated to local charities.

  • MEXICO is the DISTILLERY’S HOME AWAY from home

The majority of the distillery products are made on the premises in San Diego, but that’s not the case for its Tequila. The law requires that Tequila originate directly from Jalisco, Mexico. This is why Cutwater was looking to establish an agreement across that border with the Orendain family. The distillery of the Orendain family produces Cutwater’s award-winning Bianco reposado and Anejo tequilas.


From July 8 to September. 30 2021, the Cutwater Tasting Room and Kitchen in San Diego offers its Pride Cocktail. One dollar of every purchase and $1 of the match by Cutwater will be made available to the charity The Center SD. Call it Baby I was Poured This Way. The cocktail comprises Cutwater White Rum, toasted coconut, macadamia, and blue Curacao lime, the glistening pea flower floating.


The distiller and the founder the distiller and founder of Cutwater, Yuseff Cherney (who was previously the head of brewing for Ballast Point), is also is the head instructor of the UC SanDie’s Professional Certificate in Brewing program. This program completed between 18 and 24 months provides both practical and academic training for professionals in the brewing industry at an entry level. Courses range from brewery safety to food pairings and the history and origins of beer.
